Why Obedience Matters in Dog Training

Mastering Seven Essential Commands

Is your dog everyone’s favorite?
Training is key to ensuring your dog is well-behaved and friendly.
Remember, a trained dog is a happy dog!

1. SIT

  • Teaching ‘sit’ is straightforward.
  • Helpful for managing puppies and encouraging self-control.
  • Example: Train your dog to sit at the doorbell to prevent jumping on guests.
  • Steps:
    1. Use a treat to guide your dog’s nose up and bottom down.
    2. Command “SIT” when in position, reward with a treat and affection.
  • Use ‘sit’ before meals, walks, or when calmness is needed.

2. COME (Recall)

  • Essential for safety and control.
  • Useful if the dog is off-leash or the door is open.
  • Steps:
    1. With a leash and collar, command “COME” and gently pull.
    2. Reward your dog when they return.

3. DOWN

  • More challenging due to its submissive nature.
  • Keep training positive, especially for anxious dogs.
  • Steps:
    1. Use a smelly treat in a closed fist.
    2. Lower your hand to the floor, encouraging your dog to follow.
    3. Command “DOWN” when in position, reward with a treat or affection.
  • Avoid forcing; encourage each step towards the correct posture.

4. STAY

  • Challenging for active dogs.
  • Requires consistency and practice.
  • Steps:
    1. Command “STAY” with a steady voice and hand signal.
    2. Reward for staying put, gradually increase distance.
  • If your dog moves, calmly reset without shouting.

5. NO!

  • Useful for impulse control.
  • Steps:
    1. Place a treat on the ground, leashed dog nearby.
    2. Command “NO” when the dog moves towards the treat, gently pull back.
    3. Reward with “YES” and a treat when they obey.

6. TAKE IT & DROP IT

  • Teaches exchange and release of objects.
  • Steps:
    1. Encourage your dog to take a toy with “TAKE IT.”
    2. Introduce a second toy, commanding “DROP IT” for the first and “TAKE IT” for the second.
  • Reinforces conditional associations and obedience.

7. GET OFF

  • For managing off-limit areas like beds or sofas.
  • Steps:
    1. Command “OFF” when your dog is in a restricted area.
    2. Reward with affection and praise when they comply.
    3. Follow up with “SIT” and reward again.
